A mother-to-be caused controversy online when she revealed that her husband pays for her mortgage, bills, food and date nights.

But according to Katie Postl, the couple is still 50/50, as she is currently “carrying his child.”

The 29-year-old shared the tongue-in-cheek sentiment in a now-viral Instagram post.

“He could do a little more if you ask me,” she jokingly wrote in the caption.

However, it sparked controversy when disgruntled social media users called her post “an awkward flex” and demanded she “work harder”.

“It’s embarrassing for a woman to share this,” said one male critic.

“Is its only function to be the carriage for reproduction? I understood.”

“He deserves more from a woman”, criticized another.

“These posts are so annoying and nasty,” said a third reviewer, a woman.

“As a girl, carrying a child is a blessing, but don’t act like it stops you.”

But not everything was negative.

Several viewers defended Katie, who lives in California, and said she is “lucky to be in such a happy position.”

One woman even joked that Katie should charge her husband “a delivery fee” after giving birth.

“Girl, you really are doing most of the work,” assured one.

“Being a mother is a never-ending job,” said a second.

“I don’t know why people are mad because she discovered the formula for a happy marriage.”

How to cut your bills

IF you are struggling financially, you can cut the cost of your bills to help you get out of the red.

City tax: You can request a reduction in council tax on the UK Government website, but you will need to meet certain criteria. Your bill can be reduced by up to 100% if you are on low income or claim benefits. Caregivers who look after someone in the household for at least 35 hours a week are also exempt from payment.

Water: Families can save money by purchasing a water meter, but it all depends on how much you are using. To check whether it is worth it financially, consult the Water Consumers Council free water meter calculator.

Rent: If you have space available and your landlord or local authority says it’s okay to do so, consider taking on a flatmate. You will not only share the cost of the rent, but also the other bills.

Rental Purchase: If you are having difficulty making your rental payments, you can usually end the contract by returning the goods. You will have to pay all installments due by the time the contract ends, but this will limit the amount owed. Contact Advice to Citizens for free to get more help with this.

Gas and electricity: MoneySavingExpert says families can save £330 on average by switching from Standard Variable Tariffs (SVTs) to a better rate. Use a comparison site like Money Supermarket or Power helpline to see what offers are available.

Mortgage: If you find yourself in debt on your mortgage payments, don’t expect the lender to chase you down. Find out what you can afford using Citizen advisory budget tool so you can discuss your payment options with your mortgage provider.

Secure loan: Your secured loan may be covered by the Consumer Credit Act and if it is, you may be able to apply for a Time Order. This is a special arrangement from the courts that allows you more time to make payments. Secured loans not covered by the Consumer Credit Act include gas, electricity or water meters, payments that need to be repaid in full, mortgages, credit union loans, loans from an employer and some short-term business agreements.

District Court Judgments: If you receive a claim form from the County Court, speak to a free debt advice service straight away. That includes Advice to Citizens (0808 800 9060), Step change (0800 138 1111) and the National debt line (0808 808 4000).

Television license: Some families are eligible for a reduced rate or free TV license. Check here to see if you are eligible for a reduced or free rate.

“Honestly, since pregnancy and childbirth can literally cost you your life, I’m saying you’re doing most of the work,” said a third woman.

Last year, it was revealed that the number of fathers out of work and caring for their families has almost halved in three decades, to just 1.6 million.

Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed the fall was mainly driven by changing behavior among women.

Thirty years ago, housewives made up 35% of the UK’s “economically inactive” population – but this has now fallen to less than 19%.

Official analysis has raised fears that new parents are being put in an “impossible position” to raise their children.

This is due to the rising cost of living, which means that couples can no longer afford to have just one person earning in the household.
