If my dog, Frankie, a 4-year-old mix, had her way, she would spend every waking — and sleeping — minute glued to my side or my husband’s side. At night, she cuddles in bed with us, but during the day she has a different place to nap: the Sheri’s Best Friends Original Calming Donut Bed. Even though she picks the litter for dog beds (yes, we are those ones people, who have multiple beds for our only dog), Frankie almost always falls for this cute creation. We try elevated beds for dogs, designer beds for dogs and orthopedic beds for dogs (she chewed all the filling), and I swear, nothing compares to the relaxation she experiences in this round hug. After being wrapped around it for just a few minutes, it goes out like a light.
It’s a not-so-hard life: This plush dog bed helps calm a nervous pup.
And here’s the thing: Frankie is a nervous dog who is completely petrified by new things. We recently bought a new trash can, and for hours she was hiding around it, peering warily out of the corner of her eye. So you can imagine I thought she might need an adjustment period when she brought home the Donut Bed. Not the case! She sniffed and jumped in, resting her head on the raised ledge.
That was a few years ago, and the bed has held up incredibly well, even though Frankie is what pet companies call a “power chewer” – lucky me! She nibbled at the fabric and even tugged, but this is a nearly indestructible dog bed (I think the ultra-shaggy faux fur cover sits on her tongue and helps discourage chewing). We have the large size and it is very easy to clean: just remove the polyfill lining at the base and edges and throw the rest of the bed in the washing machine. It looks beautifully fluffy.
At 60 pounds, Frankie is a big girl and likes to curl up and bury herself in the bed until she stretches out on it. She’s not the only fan. The Donut Bed has over 58,000 five-star reviews on Amazon, and I have to say, I’m not surprised.
“I read the comments and thought this would be good for our nervous Chihuahua. It was like magic when we got it. She sleeps on it all the time and sleeps soundly,” he wrote a fan.
Parents of large pups agree with me that it’s a great bed for large dogs, too: “One of my dogs is 120 pounds and has never used any other bed. Easy to wash, durable and fits comfortably. It even maintains its shape well. I can’t recommend this dog bed enough! he wrote another buyer.
Even cats seem to love this thing, which I really consider it a victory. As a reviewer said: “We have several of these beds and our dogs (and often our cats) love to snuggle in them! dreams in this bed!”
As a home editor, design is very important to me, and while this may not be the most stylish dog bed I’ve seen, it comes in several colors, including plenty of neutrals like taupe, taupe, and cream, so you can take your pick. something to complement your home.
If humping isn’t your thing, you can also buy this lower-pile faux fur dog bed.
