I love good bedding. Give me a fluffy comforter, a support pillow, some luxurious sheets – I’m in heaven. After wearing out a set of Cozy Earth sheets almost a year ago, I realized the effect a good set can have on my sleep. But as much as I love my Cozy Earth, laundry day happens every week and I needed to find a worthy backup — in a more affordable price range.

The internet took aim at Mellanni’s beloved sheets, to the tune of countless compliments and more 250,000 five-star Amazon reviews. Described as “soft as butter”, my mind began to wonder what it would be like to sleep on a soft stick of butter. Luckily, the brand sent me some samples of its much-lauded sheets. I distributed the three sets among friends and we immediately started napping — I mean, testing.

Mellanni

The internet calls these microfiber sheets “buttery soft” — I wanted to know what it was like to sleep on a stick of softened butter.

Pros

  • Exceptionally soft
  • Cheap
  • Well washed, no shrinking, fading or pilling
  • Deep pocket sheet won’t slip or slide
Cons

  • Extremely thin
  • The bottom of the sheets is slippery and feels cheap
  • Not recommended for hot sleepers

True to Internet reports, these sheets are soft — I mean, they are damn you soft. They’re the kind of softness that’s usually reserved for children’s pajamas. They’re made from brushed microfiber so they have an almost plush feel. I could see why this aspect won people over. For people who love soft sheets but don’t love the silky feel, these fit that narrow niche and will satisfy that sensory desire.

They are also extremely lightweight. That’s not to say they’re cool (more on that later), but if you prefer a thinner sheet, these will win you over.

They also seem to wash well. We’ve only had them for a few months, but so far so good. My fellow testers and I are happy to report that there are no pillings and the colors appear true.

These colors, in fact, are abundant – 44 in total. They range from deep, saturated, maximalist hues to calming pastels, while prints cover everything from florals to paisley, plaids to chevrons. A buyer would be hard-pressed not to find at least one (and probably a few) sets they like. I stuck with the sage green, but my friends, who have tested the terra cotta and emerald, report that the colors remain strong after multiple washes.

The deep pocket sheet was another winning feature. “We have a problem with the sheets riding up due to the mattress protector on our bed,” said a friend/tester. “We don’t have that problem with that.”

The three of us testers were a little divided on these spreadsheets. From my perspective, they fall into the “you get what you pay for” camp. My biggest complaint is that they are thin – we’re talking thin. I could feel every stitch of my mattress cover through them. If you expect them to last more than a few months, be sure to trim your toenails with meticulous regularity and no let a cat into your bed.

That said, other testers found the lightweight construction to be one of the set’s best features. “They are perfect for spring and summer weather,” said one, while another called them “breezy.”

We also found that although the pillows’ contact sides, fitted sheet, and top sheet were exceptionally soft, the bottom felt like regular cheap sheets. As a die-hard devotee of top sheets, the slippery side of the sheets made my skin crawl — but didn’t bother other testers.

You’ll be hard-pressed to find $40 sheets that are as nice as these, and while they’re not exactly cooling, their lightweight construction makes them a good choice for hot weather. That said, for $45 more you can truly find high quality sheets for well under $100 that will stay up longer and feel more luxurious when you sleep on them.

These are fast-fashion sheets, and while I save them for my guest bedroom (in fact, Reddit seems to love these sheets for guest houses and Airbnbs), they unfortunately won’t be in my regular personal rotation. On the other hand, they earned a spot in one of our tester’s “favorite summer sheets” stashes.

If you’re looking for a soft, fresh, highly affordable sheet set, you could do worse. But if you want something truly luxurious, you could do better.

Amazon

Our testers praised these sheets for their softness and said their lightweight weave made them “perfect for spring and summer.”
