Korean beauty is a US$13 billion deal that leaves beauty and skincare lovers excited. So why is K-beauty so popular?
Products are often an effective and innovative way to achieve glowing, hydrated and smoother skin. They’re also unique, both in terms of natural ingredients that sometimes seem wild — snail slime, anyone? – and its Instagram-worthy packaging.
Here are three popular K-beauty ingredients worth trying.
Snail slime. It may sound unpleasant, but snail slime (or mucin) is highly moisturizing, leaving skin soft and supple. To try Mizon Snail Repair Eye Cream ($17, amazon.com) or Mizon Snail Repair Intensive Ampoule ($19, amazon.com). Don’t want to use a cream that contains snail slime? Try one with hyaluronic acid, which will provide similar benefits.
Bee venom. Kate Middleton is reportedly a fan of skincare products with bee venom. The ingredient is said to increase blood flow, resulting in softer, plumper skin. To try Miss Spa Bee Venom Filling Mask ($16, ulta.com) or Rodial Bee Venom Night Gel ($165, amazon.com). (Warning: Make sure you don’t have a bee allergy before trying.)
Matcha. It’s not just for hot tea. The superfood – made from ground green tea leaves – has been used in Eastern medicine for thousands of years. It is full of powerful antioxidants, which fight free radicals that can damage the skin, and has an anti-inflammatory effect to soothe the skin. To try Peach and Lily Matcha Pudding Antioxidant Cream ($43, ulta.com).
