A high-end sports car brand has discontinued two of its most popular engines as it races to meet its goal of being electric-only vehicles by 2028.

The move will end a 65-year tradition after the company killed off the third model in the set earlier this year.

Maserati first introduced V8 engines for its road cars in 1959, although it had been using them in racing cars since the 1930s.

Since 2002, the engines have been produced in collaboration with Ferrari, most recently being incorporated into Maserati’s M156 platform.

However, the company has confirmed that it is the end of the road for its V8 models as it moves towards an all-electric range.

The last two remaining V8s, the beloved Quattroporte and the Levante SUV, will not be renewed for a new generation.

Maserati released a Grand Finale edition of the former as an overture to the engine – a unique custom for a US buyer.

The duo will join Ghibli on the cutting room floor after it went out of production earlier this year following a decade on sale.

This leaves the brand with just four cars in its range at the moment, namely the Granturismo, Grecale, Grancabrio and MC20 (as well as their associated variants).

The move aims to prepare the ground for a full electrification of the brand in the coming years.

Electric variants of the two discontinued models are already “in preparation” to accompany the EV versions of the Grecale, Granturismo and Grancabrio.

The electric Levante is expected to take first place after it was confirmed that the Quattroporte EV has been delayed until 2028.

A Maserati spokesperson said: “Maserati is in a period of transition to electrification with its Folgore BEV program.

“Today the Tridente offers [the] Granturismo and Grancabrio in ICE and BEV versions [and the] Grecale in ICE, mild-hybrid and BEV versions, while we confirm that successors to the Quattroporte and Levante are also in the pipeline.”

It comes after an extremely rare Ferrari, which has driven just one mile a day since it was made, went up for sale.
