The presenter saw a fleet of Lux cars, supercars and SUVs pass through his garage over the years.

Highlights included the Ferrari 335 he compared to “Screaming God” and a Jaguar F Type he fell in love with while filming the latest Grand Tour special.

However, it seems that one item from his vast collection sticks out in his mind more than others.

Speaking to Drivetribe’s YouTube channel, he was asked what the worst car purchase he’s ever made was.

In response, he said: “The worst car buying decision I ever made wasn’t buying a car.

“But I sold a three-liter BMW CSL for next to nothing, £3,000.

“That was stupid, absolutely stupid.”

The beautiful 3.0 CSL was launched in 1972, with just 1,265 ever made.

In fact, all of this was done to allow the car to meet European touring car testing standards. Championship.

In fact, he had great success in motorsport, winning the championship six times between 1973 and 1979.

And given that similar models are listed online for more than £100,000, even the most generous Clarkson fan can admit that her £3,000 asking price was a mistake.

The TV star will, however, be pleased to know that BMW has indeed revived the model in 2023, launching a new version as its “most exclusive automobile ever”.

Dubbed “the return of a legend”, just 50 were handmade in the company’s Bavarian factory, sporting a delightful 70s-inspired racing livery.

Unfortunately, the new CSL has long been sold out, with a listing in Hamburg valuing it at more than £1 million.

This comes after a super rare Lamborghini, one of three of its kind, went up for sale for an exorbitant price.
