The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has also told property owners they cannot alter or build any existing sidewalks if they do not have the proper permit, the local news outlet reported. Butler Radio reported.

The license residents need is called a Highway Occupancy License, or more commonly known as a HOP license.

It allows property owners to build new sidewalks on their property and must be submitted at least 30 days before residents begin construction.

The fee for the residence permit is $25.

Residents can find it on the PennDOT website or receive it by calling the PennDOT office.

Obtaining approval to begin road construction in the state is crucial to avoid being hit with a hefty fine.

Homeowners who fail to comply with building regulations will be fined $100 plus court costs related to their case.

Once construction is complete, the owner must notify PennDOT.

The second notification to PennDOT ensures that a final inspection can be performed on the construction.

In other US states, residents are also at risk of receiving tickets for even using their own sidewalks.

A California homeowner says she was fined for parking her car in front of her house the same way she had for more than a decade.

Shari Johnston explained that she was hit with the ticket after her vehicle was parked in her garage.

The city said she had blocked part of the sidewalk.

When to redo your garage floor

Here are the classic signs that a driveway needs an update…

Paved sidewalks should last about 20 years.

However, leaking engine oil, extreme temperatures, heavy rain or large cars can damage the strength of the pavement.

Keep an eye out for these classic signs:

  • Small cracks that won’t connect
  • Holes
  • Sunken spots
  • Illuminated color
  • Edges breaking

Some driveway repairs may just need a quick resurface. Unresolved issues may require complete repaving.

Most repairs will cost drivers between $1 and $3 a square foot.

“Our garage is where we pay,” Johnston said.

Other properties on his street had shorter sidewalks, so part of his vehicle was hanging over the sidewalk.

The owner argued that she could not put her Subaru SUV in the garage.

Johnston said she had another vehicle there and the Subaru wouldn’t fit.
