A MOTOR company manufactured engines for cargo trucks that exceeded US emissions limits, resulting in a costly settlement.
Between 2011 and 2021, truck drivers for a Japanese company will have just a few weeks to request a payment of up to US$15,000.
Depending on the type of truck, the payment can be as little as $1,500, according to the Daily Mail reported.
Hino Trucks, a Japanese engine manufacturer owned by Toyota, was found guilty of manufacturing engines that exceeded United States emissions standards.
Two years ago, Hino released a company statement that “identified misconduct,” which triggered the class action lawsuit.
The statement said that its trucks’ fuel economy reported worse mileage than what the company saw during testing, signaling that emissions regulations were not up to par.
The Tokyo-based company did not openly admit to knowingly making “dirty” engines, but agreed to settle a lawsuit for $237.5 million.
The class action lawsuit found Hino guilty of continuing to manufacture and ship trucks that met standards.
Instead, Hino hid the information from companies, private buyers and regulatory forces.
The amount of almost US$240 million will be used to pay truck drivers who, unknowingly, polluted because of the engine.
Drivers in the U.S. operating the 2013 to 2020 Hino 155 and 195 trucks are encouraged to apply quickly, just as drivers of the 2011 to 2020 238, 258 and 338 trucks are encouraged to apply.
To qualify for up to $15,000, drivers have until June 17, 2024 to apply.
After that, drivers will no longer be eligible for payment.
Previous owners of sold trucks will see 60% of payments per truck attributed to the original owner.
40% of the remuneration will be divided between the previous owners.
To sign up, have the qualifying truck’s VIN on hand and enter it on the Hino website to verify the truck.
Proof of ownership will also be required, as well as proof of title and purchase contract.
Any insurance documentation will be helpful in verifying the driver’s identity.
Medium trucks were mainly used to transport or deliver goods.
At the time of publication, there is no published date for when paychecks will be sent out.
However, drivers only have just over a month to sign up.
If you have a qualified truck, submit your claim here.
