DRIVERS living in a certain area have been accused of taking extreme measures to protect their precious parking spaces.

Although they monopolize space on public streets outside their homes, they could park in your driveway, others say.

A New York newspaper writer shared his bizarre parking experiences with Staten Island live.

“Staten Islanders take parking spaces in front of their homes very seriously,” wrote Tom Wrobleski in the second of a two-part feature about the subject.

In his first article, he admitted to being stressed about finding parking spaces outside his Staten Island home.

His quest became his “mission in life.”

“What is it about this territorial instinct that turns us into fanged wolverines?” he pondered.

His first-person article generated a flood of responses from other Staten Island residents.

And it was clear that they resorted to all sorts of tricks to prevent other owners from taking over their favorite street parking spaces.

He referred to the tactics as “outrageous parking shenanigans.”

“One person said that if they see someone parked in ‘their’ spot, they will honk their own car’s horn until the intruder gets out and moves the car,” Wrobleski wrote.

ALIEN CARS

“Another does the old trick of parking nearby, stopping just behind the bumper of the alien car.”

Then there was the situation where a family had to arrange parking for several vehicles.

Therefore, they resorted to spaces reserved for their families, effectively blocking public space for their private use.

Entitlement never seems to surprise me and it’s getting worse as the years go by.

Another resident described calling ahead upon returning home so that his partner could ensure specific locations were free for his arrival.

One of the most bizarre responses came from someone who said their neighbor didn’t even have a car.

But she blocked off a space in front of her house with trash cans and other objects because she was very territorial and didn’t want anyone else to grab it.

The reporter also noted how some residents parked on the street with one vehicle and used a second car to block – but never parked – their own driveway.

“That doesn’t make sense to me,” Wrobleski said.

CONES

Other readers cited neighbors who place orange traffic cones in their favorite spots to deter others from stealing the spaces.

But he also admitted his own selfish occupation of parking spaces.

Wrobleski said he rarely used the garage and garage that belonged to him because they are both located within a block of his home — and he didn’t bother making that extra short trip.

The theme also touched Redditwhere people on the platform complained about “entitled residents of Staten Island.”

A driver said he became angry when a woman approached him after he parked on a public road near a garage near a business.

She honked at him and asked him to move out of the way so she could park there.

CAR CRASHES

“Entitlement never seems to surprise me and it’s only getting worse over the years,” the Reddit user added.

“I have family members like that and I tell them to their faces how crazy they are.

“They literally don’t park in the garage, so one of their cars is always in front of their house,” said another.

One person said they became angry after a landlord reprimanded them for parking in his wife’s street space.

But he explained to the man that he would take his girlfriend out to dinner on Valentine’s Day and it wouldn’t be long.

“We came back and found that the guy’s wife had blocked me in front and he used his vehicle to block me in the back, so I was stuck,” the driver said.

“Little did they know that I had a (decrepit) 2004 Toyota… I crashed my vehicle back and forth, damaging the bumpers of both cars, freed myself and drove away.”
