“I had an accident in my previous vehicle. The vehicle was destroyed,” Sanders told the ABC affiliate. KMGH in Denver in October 2022.

Sanders bought a new car and brought it back to his apartment around 9:30 p.m. two years ago.

Her apartment requires a parking pass that costs $8 a month and must be assigned to your license plate number.

The new car had a different license plate when she brought it back.

This led to Sander’s car being towed just two hours later.

WITHOUT WARNING

Sanders was extremely upset because she had a temporary tag and it cost $367 to get her car back.

She said the towing company also dented her vehicle.

“There was no warning. It just disappeared,” Sanders told KMGH.

“I think people deserve some kind of warning, especially in a situation where a vehicle is obviously a new purchase.

My car was towed after I parked at McDonald’s for 3 minutes – it cost $217 to get it back, but I had the last laugh

“It has a temporary tag. I was hoping for a little grace.”

However, the towing company went against the Colorado Bill of Towing Rights, which requires 24 hours notice before towing a car, per KMGH.

“I find it very threatening to know that there is someone driving in our parking lot waiting to find the next person to be victimized,” Sanders said.

“Every day when I go out to get in the car, I wonder if he will be there.”

“I don’t think what happened was fair.”

Rep. Naquetta Ricks, D-Arapahoe, who co-sponsored the legislation, said Sander’s situation is what lawmakers were trying to put an end to.

“I’m shocked. And we’ve been getting more and more complaints,” Ricks told KMGH.

What to do if you are towed

  • Stay calm
  • Check your surroundings
  • Contact local authorities
  • Find towing company
  • Gather information
  • Ask for documentation
  • Bring the necessary documents
  • Arrange transport
  • Bring payment
  • Inspect your car
  • follow

“I know some customers got their money back because they questioned illegal tows.

“And we just have to continue to make this happen, because it seems like the towing companies are still out there, lurking in the shadows.”

Another driver mysteriously had her car. towed from Walmart and had to pay double to get it back.

This parking incident involved a parking crackdown that generated $6 million in ticket revenue.
