AN EXPERT mechanic has revealed a simple but vital check that could save you thousands of dollars in repair costs.
Scotty Kilmer, who has more than 50 years of engine experience, encouraged drivers to check a vital component found in all petrol and diesel cars.
Keeping an eye on the battery’s health and replacing it when it becomes weak can prevent other problems from arising in your engine, the mechanic said.
He added that a weak battery can lead to “voltage spikes” that can cause the device to backfire.
Changing the battery is usually an easy and cost-effective repair compared to the exorbitant fees for larger upgrades.
Road users who give their components a simple check end up paying just ten percent of the price.
He revealed the tip on his YouTube channel, which is dedicated to improving drivers’ experience and minimizing repair costs.
On his channel, Scotty said: “Because modern cars are all powered by computers, if your battery is getting really bad, you can still start the car, but the electricity is so low that the alternator has to produce a lot of electricity.
“You can have voltage spikes that damage computer components.
“My advice is if it says your battery is less than 30%, buy another battery.”
New batteries in the UK can cost up to £100, according to BookMyGarage.
However, final bills vary depending on a number of factors, such as the type of car and the length of time indicated on the battery.
The expert mechanic added that not replacing the battery when it is low could result in drivers having to replace the alternator in the future, which is significantly more expensive.
Drivers can check battery life with a simple diagnostic test that can cost as little as £30 from some suppliers.
Halfords is currently offering a free battery health check on its website.
The leading breakdown specialists and car insurance specialists in the RAC are also offering health screenings.
Advanced technology can check whether a battery’s condition has deteriorated and whether it needs to be replaced immediately.
Diagnostic checks can also determine if there are any problems with the vehicle’s charging and starting system.
It comes after Scotty revealed a way to make your car air conditioning “twice as cold” this summer.
And this expert mechanic shared how simply washing your car at home can ruin it and leave you paying hundreds in repairs.
