A DRIVER was parking at Walmart when she was approached by an older man who accused her of abusing his grandmother’s sign.

His face, she said, was priceless after she showed him what his disability was.

Allison Lang, TikTok creator (@allisonelang) was trying to finish his errands for the day by visiting the local Walmart and parked in a handicapped spot, taking care to hang his sign on the rearview mirror.

In a recent video posted to her account last month, her seemingly normal day was thwarted by a man who approached her vehicle as she was about to exit the car.

“I can’t believe this happened to me,” she said from the driver’s seat.

“So I’m parking at Walmart and I park in the accessible space and I hang up my pass and a middle-aged man comes up to my window and knocks.”

Frightened, Lang keeps the window closed for her safety, so the man decides to get his point across in a different way.

“Through the glass, he’s telling me, ‘Miss, you can’t park there and use your grandmother’s pass and park in a handicapped spot,’” she recalled.

Suddenly, Lang felt the need to prove himself and returned the man’s energy.

“So I open my door and show him this,” she said, and changed the camera perspective to show her feet.

One of his legs was a prosthetic.

“’Um, excuse me, sir, I have one leg,’” she said.

“And then he said, ‘Oh, my God, I’m so sorry, I didn’t know! You looked too young to be disabled.'”

To the man, through her platform, she decided to clarify some harmful stigmas about disability to take with her.

“First of all, sir, not all disabilities are visible,” she said to Lang.

“So don’t judge. And disability has no age.”

In the caption of the video, she wrote that she was disabled since birth and has therefore been using a prosthetic leg for as long as she can remember.

She hopes her story reminds people to be mindful of the plight of others before saying anything.

“Please stop approaching people in parking lots and calling them liars,” she wrote.

Parking in handicapped spaces is illegal in the United States due to accessibility concerns.

Parking in a disabled space without a valid license plate prevents people with disabilities from accessing a space that could help them get to their destination quickly and safely.

White spaces near spaces are designed to provide space for loading and unloading wheelchairs, and blocking them can create problems for those who need the space most.

San Francisco, California has the most expensive fines for illegally occupying a handicapped space, with $400 for blocking wheelchair access and $866 for missing a handicapped sign and associated parking.

“When I wear pants you can’t see my disability.”

One of Lang’s readers commented on her own similar story of a woman who didn’t mind her own business.

“I’m 29 years old, have been chronically ill for 10 years, and received the comment ‘You’re abusing your grandparents’ poster comment,’” they wrote.

“What did I do to the older woman who told me that? I lifted my shirt and showed them my two feeding tubes.”

Another viewer said it was a comment she heard regularly – but no one believed it until they had a witness.

“My sister didn’t believe this happened until she was in the car with me!” Her comment was read.

Someone said this is unfortunately a common comment they get from older men.

“This happens all the time. Always old,” they wrote.

“I have severe arthritis and have been using a cane since I was 27.”
