Car maintenance work you only need to do once every five years could ‘make your engine last TWICE as long’

A MECHANIC has claimed that an easy car maintenance job, which you only need to do once every five years, can make your engine “last twice as long”.

Drivers can save thousands by reducing wear and tear on their engines – all you need is a £5 kit from Amazon.

Engine genius Scotty Kilmer has drawn on his 50+ years in the industry to share advice on his YouTube channel.

He urged drivers to pay attention to an often overlooked part of their cars: the radiator cap.

This plastic lid seals the cooling system and keeps it pressurized, which Scotty compared to a can of soda.

He said: “Your car’s radiator system is under pressure.

“Just like a can of soda… when you open the lid it releases all the pressure.

“This is why you never take the cover off a hot engine.

“Soda will boil everywhere.”

If this happens while you’re driving, it could cause thousands of pounds worth of damage to your engine and leave you stranded on the side of the road.

That’s why Scotty recommended keeping an eye on your radiator cap and changing it regularly to make sure it doesn’t burst.

He added: “The lid has rubber seals and small springs inside.

“They wear out over time…so the coolant will evaporate from the system.

“If you want the coolant to stay inside the radiator, just change the cap every five or six years.”

The good thing is that you can change the cap easily at home.

When the engine has cooled, simply remove the old cover and screw the new one back on.

Replacements only cost around £5 on Amazon.

Just be sure to check that the new lid is rated to withstand the same amount of pressure as the old one—this is usually displayed on a label on the top of the part.
