RESIDENTS of a Las Vegas homeowners association say their community’s new look has turned their neighborhood into a parking prison.

Homeowners are now alleging that their HOA is purposely targeting them, using predatory tactics to tow people’s cars.

Crystal, a homeowner in the community of Trissino, shared her frustration with the local ABC affiliate KTNV-TVwhom she reached out to in hopes of clarifying the situation in her community.

In October 2019, she went out and saw her car stolen from the garage.

But it wasn’t stolen.

Instead, her HOA towed it from her property in the middle of the night while she slept.

“We woke up at 4:30 in the morning thinking our truck had just been stolen,” Crystal said, adding that the entire situation was stressful and exhausting.

Crystal and her family purchased their home in this HOA neighborhood in May.

Like many residents, they park one vehicle in the garage and another in the garage because their vehicles are too long to fit both in the garage.

This worked very well until the night the truck disappeared without warning.

“All of a sudden, one night… the truck just disappeared,” Crystal said.

Despite parking the vehicle there for months, it was towed without any warning or letter.

The truck was parked at the end of the driveway, between the red lines of a fire lane.

The worst part is that Crystal has no idea what she did wrong.

She says parking regulations enforced by her HOA are confusing and inconsistently applied.

Some owners can park in certain areas while others cannot, which has led to widespread confusion and frustration around what is allowed and what is not.

To make matters worse, “no parking beyond this point” signs are often covered by trees, leaving residents unknowingly parked in areas where they shouldn’t park.

Both Crystal and another resident, Mike Morphis, have experienced multiple tows.

Morphis’ truck was towed twice, once while he was inside getting his children ready for school.

Because the end of your driveways is considered a fire lane in this neighborhood, no advance notice is required for towing as it is considered a safety concern, according to the Nevada Transportation Authority.

Since then, the community has been asking for more transparency and better communication from the HOA.

County Commissioner Justin Jones, who represents the area, acknowledged this ongoing problem, noting that densely populated single-family homes were not designed with adequate parking.

Jones emphasized the need for HOA boards to give advance notice before enforcing on-street parking regulations.

“My own vehicle has been towed from the front of my house twice by my HOA and it is extremely frustrating,” Jones said.

“I think there were some mistakes made in some higher-density communities,” Jones says.

He says he will work to resolve this issue and address the need for affordable housing in the valley.

“My main concern as county commissioner is not making sure builders or developers make more money, I don’t particularly care about that,” Jones said.

“I care that people who live in my district or want to live in my district can’t do that right now because they’re simply out of the market.”

In response to the backlash, the Trissino HOA board announced it is reviewing its towing strategy and may consider refunding towing fees.

Ashley’s Towing, contracted by the HOA to remove cars from the neighborhood, no longer operates in Trissino, although the reasons are still unclear.

While change may be on the horizon, residents already feel trapped and untrustworthy in their community.

“It makes you want to leave the area,” Morphis said.

“It makes you want to go somewhere where they don’t have an HOA.”

Full statement from the Trissino Homeowners Association

Full statement released by the Trissino Homeowners Association in conjunction with Real Properties Management Group, Inc.:

The Trissino Homeowners Association, together with Real Properties Management Group, Inc., adheres to the policies and procedures set forth in the association’s governing documents. At this time, without knowing the details, here are general examples of parking violations that would be subject to tagging or towing. Any vehicle that may be abandoned, without license plates and/or expired plates, stored, fire lane and parked vehicle has passed the NO PARKING BEYOND THIS POINT sign, as the entire dead end is a fire lane, which includes parking on the edge of sidewalks.
