An ambitious French automaker will produce a limited number of hybrids with nearly 2,000 horsepower.

It produces four times the power of a popular roadster and only 250 will be produced.

Bugatti, known for the Chiron Super Sport and Veyron, both crowned as the fastest production cars of their time, aims to win the title once again with a hybridized model.

The Tourbillon, very similar to its predecessors, will utilize 16 cylinders and electric motors to produce 1,800 horsepower and revs as high as 9,000 RPM.

“The creations of Ettore and Jean Bugatti are ingenious in their aerodynamics, innovation and lasting beauty,” said Frank Heyl, the brand’s design director, quoted by Newsweek.

“We based ourselves on the Bugatti Type 35, where the entire shape of the car was guided by the shape of the horseshoe grille, tapering down to the aerodynamic shape of the fuselage. Every design decision is geared towards creating a sense of speed, even when stopped.”

The kind of power at such high RPM is rare and only seen on select models.

The Honda S2000, for example, produced 246 horsepower from two liters of naturally aspirated engineering and could accelerate up to 8,900 RPM, according to Driving.

The Tourbillon, similar to the S2000, does not use turbochargers unlike the Veyron and Chiron.

The Veyron used four turbochargers to produce 1,000 horsepower.

Instead, the V16 produces 1,000 without the help of turbines, and the electric motors on each axle make up the extra 800.

Each electric motor will have an individual oil-based cooling system for the batteries, allowing them to work under strong acceleration.

Bugatti to launch hypercar in 2024 with ‘never-before-seen features’

Despite the large number of technological and electrical components involved in each horsepower, the car weighs just 3,970 pounds.

That weighs less than a Toyota 4Runner, which has a curb weight of 4,400 to 4,805 pounds, depending on the trim level.

The hybrid hypercar will have a top speed of 248 mph, faster than any previous Bugatti.

So far, only a few cars come close to the Tourbillon’s numbers.

The 2011 Veyron produces 1,200 horsepower, 199 more than previous model years.

The Tesla Roadster, recently announced as having Space X “rocket” aspects, is rumored to come with over 1,000 horsepower, but exact numbers have not been revealed.

The Lamborghini Revuelto produces as much as the Veyron with 1,001 horsepower and a top speed of 350 km/h.

The Lucid Air Dream Edition Performance produces an impressive 1,111 all-electric horsepower with two electric motors and can reach 60 mph from a standstill in 2.9 seconds, reported Engine1.

Interestingly, the SP Automotive Chaos, a hybridized hypercar like the Tourbillion that has yet to be released, will produce 3,000 horsepower from a 4.0-liter V10 with two turbos and a hybrid engine.

The car comes from Greece and will cost US$14.4 million.

Bugatti is taking online orders for the $4.1 million Tourbillon, with deliveries beginning next year.
