What is a practical driving test?

Practical driving tests are carried out by official staff from the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).

During the exam, they drive students on roads to assess their driving ability, as well as to ensure they are able to comply with road laws and perform specific maneuvers such as:

  • Parallel parking
  • Reverse parking
  • Three-point turnaround
  • Emergency stop
  • Parking in the bay
  • Turning at an intersection or roundabout
  • Lane change
  • Start of the climb

All of this is essential so that drivers of all ages and abilities can operate safely and legally.

The test takes place in a local town and usually takes between 40 and 70 minutes.

Proper braking, use of signals, and checking mirrors and blind spots will be evaluated.

As Gov.uk explains:

“To pass the driving test you must be able to:

  • Drive safely in different road and traffic conditions
  • show that you know the Highway Code by the way you drive

“The national standard for driving cars tells you everything you must be able to do to pass the test.

Examples of video clip learning drivers will be tested instead of written scenarios in major changes

“Only take the test when you can do everything without instruction.”
