GOOD Samaritans want to return lost IDs to their rightful owner, but a common tactic of posting them on social media can pose risks.

Driver’s licenses include personal information and addresses, and it’s not a good idea to post your ID to share with strangers.

The issue was highlighted by a radio station in Colorado KUAD-FM in June.

Local Facebook groups will receive many posts about lost driver’s licenses, but people have been told not to do so.

People will comment on posts wanting to return their driver’s license and inform them of the safety risk, KUAD-FM reported.

It may seem convenient to publish a driver’s license or someone’s full name and information, but this is not the case.

If you find a driver’s license, it is best to hand it over to the police and they will ensure it is returned to the owner.

A common way for the police to return a driver’s license is by mail.

Another suggestion is to place the license or ID in a mailbox and the USPS will mail it back to the owner.

‘GOLD MINE’ SCAM

Posting a driver’s license on social media can be dangerous because scammers can use it for identity theft or to try to access your accounts.

“Your ID card is a goldmine of personal information that can be used for recognition against you or your company,” according to Planet Cyber Gist.

Driver was fined $80 for his license plate – it had been canceled years ago, but authorities still said he was wrong

“Sharing it online is an open invitation for identity thieves to wreak havoc on your life.

“Publishing your ID card can attract the wrong kind of attention, not just from potential identity thieves.

“But also from marketers and spammers who could use your information to target you with unwanted communications.”

It is important to keep your full name and address private to avoid security issues.

This also applies to people who want to return IDs.

How to Reprint a Lost ID

If your valid, unexpired driver’s license (DL) or identity card (ID) is lost, stolen, mutilated, or destroyed, and no information needs to be updated on your card (address, name, etc.), you may purchase a reprint your DL/ID card online at BMV Online Services. If you are under 21 years of age, a reprint of your DL/ID cannot be requested within 30 days of your 21st birthday.

Please note that the expiration date on the reprinted DL/ID card will remain the same as listed on the card being replaced and no other information will change. You can only request a reprint online for the DL/ID that is being replaced.

Driver’s licenses must be kept exclusively with the owners.

It’s common for people to think they must have their ID on them when driving.

But there are no laws that require a driver to have a driver’s license or identification document.

However, you may encounter restrictions in some states.

There is also a change to driver’s licenses that will affect millions of people in the event of an emergency.

A ‘loophole’ in the license also caused problems for tons of drivers.
