AN UBER driver has revealed how much he earns from the app and the worst time to book a ride.
The handy side hustle can earn you hundreds in just a few hours on busier days — but there are some downsides for clients.
The driver, who goes by the name On The Road UK, took his Tesla out for a seven-hour shift in Gillingham, Kent, to give YouTube viewers an insight into a typical day behind the wheel.
In the first few hours alone he revealed he had made £25 in just four journeys, helped by the fact his engine was luxurious enough to qualify as an UberX.
This is more than double the government’s national minimum wage of £11.44 per hour.
For reference, if you were paid £25 per hour for a standard 9am to 5pm shift, that would equate to £175 per day or around £45,500 per year before tax.
However, the Uber insider revealed that at peak times he can earn even more.
He said: “Yesterday was the football game, England v Holland.
“Was very busy.
“I worked six hours and earned £190 plus a £20 cash tip from a driver who was very happy that England won.”
Similarly, in another video, he documented his time working on the day of the Euro 2024 final, where he earned £360 for 10 hours of driving at £36 an hour.
Mapped out to a year, that would mean a salary of £65,000 if every day was this good.
On the other side of its success, however, is the revelation that, as you can imagine, such busy days are the worst times to try to book an Uber.
When demand is high, prices increase and drivers prioritize higher-value trips or very short trips that keep them in city centers, where they can earn more money.
So if you need to get home, especially late at night, you could end up paying premium fares or having trouble getting a driver.
