A MECHANIC is revealing a trade secret that could save drivers thousands of dollars on an older vehicle’s AC repairs.

In a YouTube video, the technician repaired a decade-old Honda Accord air conditioning unit that hadn’t worked in three years.

Mechanic Scotty Kilmer (@scottykilmer) demonstrated the money-saving solution in a June 2021 YouTube video.

In the caption, Kilmer called the solution a “five-minute hack.”

However, the mechanic spent more than five minutes on the video showing how to implement the fix.

Kilmer began by diagnosing the Accord’s computer problems.

Despite previous repair attempts by other mechanics, the car’s AC system was still unable to produce cold air.

Kilmer discovered that the driver was able to control the speed of the vehicle’s fan, but the AC button on the dashboard did not light up when he pressed it.

Moving fans indicate that the car’s fuses were working properly.

“If the fan turns on and off, the unit is receiving power,” he said.

Instead of going through the expensive and time-consuming effort of diagnosing and repairing the computer module, Kilmer opted for a simpler solution.

Your solution completely bypassed the faulty control unit.

Kilmer connected a jumper wire from the battery’s positive terminal directly to the compressor’s power wire.

As he connected the wires, small sparks flew from the electrical connection.

This wiring maneuver started the compressor working and soon cold air began to blow inside the car.

Kilmer also installed a toggle switch below the steering wheel to control the compressor.

Expert Advice on Preparing Your Car for Summer

Dustin Piggot, a service manager at a Subaru dealership with years of technical experience, told The US Sun in an exclusive interview what items drivers should have checked before temperatures soared:

  1. Perform a multipoint inspection. A paid inspection will ask a technician to check vital systems like your brakes, power steering, and front and rear suspension for leaks or defects. They will also test the condition of the battery and check vital fluid levels and conditions.
  2. Refrigeration system. Before things get hot, drivers should have their cooling system inspected for proper coolant levels and condition, evaluate radiator hoses, and check the radiator.
  3. Check your air conditioning system. If the freon is low and needs to be charged or parts need to be replaced, it is essential to resolve the problem before the temperature rises.
  4. Make sure your tires are suitable for warmer climates. If you live in a climate that requires a dedicated winter tire, switch to all-season or summer tires if possible to extend the life of your winter tire. Winter tires are softer and wear out much more quickly in warmer climates.
  5. Observe the depth of the tread. Tires with low tread depth will make it more difficult to stop your car if you need to avoid an accident.
  6. Give your car some TLC. Before it gets too hot, Piggott says it’s important to give your car a good cleaning to remove winter grime and grime and treat its paintwork with a nice coat of wax to protect it from harsh UV rays and high heat. Many dealerships like his offer detailing and washing services.

Several commentators pointed to the video as less self-instructional and more as a demonstration of Kilmer’s skills.

“There is no way a regular local or network repair shop or dealer would EVER do a repair like this,” raved one commenter.

“If you meet a mechanic like Scotty, hold on to him for dear life. Bravo, sir. Very impressive.”

Kilmer offered car owners several summer driving tips to ensure their air conditioning works well as the temperature rises.

The mechanic offered a simple step inside the dashboard that will take the strain off the engine.

He also advised drivers to spend an extra $25 to avoid thousands on AC repairs.
