Mechanic’s warning about a costly mistake you should never make when changing your engine oil – it will ‘explode’ on the road

A MECHANIC is giving his best engine oil change tips that could save you from disaster.

The mechanic warned drivers to look for double gaskets when changing engine oil.

On a YouTube Shortthe longtime mechanic demonstrates how to avoid a double gasket for his subscribers.

“Today I’m going to show you why you should never do this when changing your engine oil,” began the energetic Kilmer.

“It’s called a double gasket, notice the oil filter gasket is there. Sometimes when you remove it from the engine, the gasket sticks to the engine.

“So when you put the new filter in, it has its own gasket. You’re going to have a gasket on top of a gasket, and it’s going to crush, and as soon as it gets pressure, it’s going to leak all the oil out of the engine.”

Kilmer tells the story of a former producer he worked with at CBS who accidentally double-jointed his Jeep.

“He had a few beers while doing the work. He put the double joint in and when he went to work in the morning, the engine blew up.

The mechanic-turned-YouTuber ends his video by telling viewers how to avoid making mistakes like his former colleagues.

“So before you put in that new oil filter, grab a flashlight,” Kilmer said, pointing to his flashlight.

“Point the [flashlight] where it screws in, make sure there is no gasket stuck there.

“If you remove your old oil filter and it looks like this [filter] without a gasket, you know the gasket is stuck somewhere.”

Kilmer’s helpful short received more than 70,000 likes and 1,300 comments.

One driver commented, saying he learned never to bend the joint the hard way.

“I did this 40 years ago, I didn’t lose an engine, but the amount of time wasted shoveling the driveway taught me a valuable lesson,” he wrote.

“I recently changed the oil myself and now it is slowly leaking,” said another commenter.

“Now I see that this was exactly the problem.

Another subscriber warned others about double joints after having a near-catastrophic experience changing the oil in his wife’s car.

“I changed the oil in my wife’s car earlier this year and this literally happened to me,” the commenter wrote.

“It’s a good idea that I always start the car after every job and take a look around to make sure everything is ok, that’s when I noticed oil spilling from underneath. I turned it off immediately and no damage was done.

“If I hadn’t checked and she had gone to work the next day, she could have blown the engine.”
