DRIVERS are facing a rule change that will change their driving identification numbers forever.

Car owners have complained about the upcoming road law, with one driver saying he has already memorized the previous number.

Starting July 31, 2024, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, or FLHSMV, will implement new rules to strengthen the security of driver’s licenses and identification cards.

The state has mandated that each license or identification number include at least four randomly generated digits.

Lawmakers hope the rules will improve the protection of individuals’ identities.

The format of licenses and ID cards will remain unchanged, but the new system will use a random formula to assign numbers.

This change will affect all drivers renewing or replacing their licenses or identification documents, whether in person or online.

First-time applicants will also receive numbers that meet the updated requirements.

But drivers expressed anger at the change, saying they were concerned about state monitoring.

One driver called the new numbers “another thing to track” in a Facebook comment.

Other drivers are upset about having to change their license numbers during the next round of registration.

“What a bummer,” one driver wrote in response to the law on Facebook, before explaining that he had memorized his number.

“I’ve been without [my license] numerous times and I had to use the driver’s license generator to find my number, and it worked.”

Some drivers have reported receiving changed numbers on their latest license renewals.

“They’ve already changed mine and it’s not the 31st yet,” wrote another driver.

“I just got a replacement.”

FLHSMV informed that, once the new number is assigned, it will only be changed if the card holder undergoes a legal name change.

All subsequent credentials, including printed reports and receipts, will automatically display updated license numbers.

Here are the major changes to Florida’s latest driver’s licenses:

All driver’s licenses and ID cards will have new numbers, including at least four randomly generated digits.

Customers who renew or replace their licenses or ID cards, in person or online, will receive a new, randomly generated number.

First-time applicants for a driver’s license or ID card will receive numbers that meet the new legal requirements.

Once a new number is assigned, it will remain unchanged unless the customer’s last name is changed.

Drivers will also have a new way to obtain other vehicle documents, according to the Tampa-based Fox affiliate WTVT-TV.

DMV kiosks have been implemented at several Publix grocery stores.

Drivers can pick up their new vehicle registration numbers from kiosks, officials said.

The DMV launched the grocery-based solution after reporting long lines at offices across the state.

Officials hope the Publix solution will alleviate wait times for DMV services and help increase convenience for drivers.
