A NEW study has found that children raised in the US are actually less environmentally friendly than those in the UK.

According to the recently published study, American children are less environmentally friendly than their British counterparts – with just 43% of children wanting an electric car as their first vehicle.

In a survey of 1,000 children ages 8 to 16, it was found that young Americans would prefer to drive an older car that they could modify.

While 41% want a car that consumes a lot of fuel and are not too concerned about “saving the planet”.

In contrast, 17% of UK children prefer cycling when they are old enough to drive.

And although 39% of British children think that “everyone” will drive an electric car in the future, only 28% of Americans think the same.

The research was commissioned by Nissan Motor Co, which created a video showing a group of children – the Futures Department – visiting the team’s headquarters to make sure the team is on track to achieve its electrification goals.

According to the brand, it intends to launch several electric cars in several important markets in the early 2030s

“Electric vehicle adoption is happening at different paces around the world,” said Trisha Jung, the automotive brand’s senior director of EV strategy and transformation.

“Part of the problem we are seeing here may have to do with range anxiety – the US is, after all, a much bigger place to drive than the UK, hence the differences in approval among children.”

“But as battery and range technology evolves – and this is happening at an incredible rate – we hope to start to see a balance,” she added.

The automobile brand launched the video on YouTube earlier this month.

The study, however, found that British and American children are equally likely to currently live in a household with an electric car (15%).

But of those who don’t, 48% of UK children would like their parents or guardians to receive one, compared to 34% of children in the US.

And if they were prime minister – or president – 54% of British children would like to see a law passed that would force everyone to drive electric vehicles, with just 41% of Americans agreeing.

Despite the seemingly anti-EV agenda, American children are more likely to think that young people can help the planet “a lot” (63% US vs. 48% UK).

Electric vs gas vehicles

Pros and cons of electric vehicles versus gasoline-powered vehicles

EV PROS:

  • Convenient (when charging at home)
  • Cheapest (depending on the state or city)
  • Cheaper maintenance due to lack of mechanical parts
  • Great for commuting
  • Reduced CO2 emissions
  • Federal and state tax incentives
  • More performance (speed, handling – depending on make and model)

EV CONS:

  • Higher initial cost
  • Higher Insurance Rates
  • More frequent tire and brake replacement intervals
  • Higher tare weight (thus causing faster wear on crucial parts)
  • Low resale value
  • High depreciation rates
  • Lack of charging infrastructure
  • Unreliable public loading (related: slow loading times)
  • Poor performance in winter and summer
  • Lack of clean energy alternatives means more “dirty energy” from coal and nuclear sources
  • Range anxiety

PROS OF GAS:

  • Highly developed refueling infrastructure
  • Fast replenishment
  • Cheapest insurance rates depending on make, model and configuration
  • Established repair industry
  • Lower initial cost
  • Greater range before refueling, especially with hybrids
  • Many manufacturers produce engines with almost fewer emissions
  • Cheaper refueling depending on location

CONS OF GAS:

  • Finite resource (related: heavy dependence on oil)
  • Carbon emissions/greenhouse gases
  • Higher repair costs
  • Higher insurance rates depending on make, model and configuration
  • Varying costs at the pump depending on state, city and county

However, British children are more likely to recycle, use reusable bags, unplug unused sockets and avoid single-use plastic than North American children.

However, young Americans are more likely to opt for secondhand clothing, check store labels to ensure they are eco-friendly, and encourage others to be more eco-friendly.

British children feel more confused about what is actually green than their American cousins (48% vs 40%), according to the OnePoll. with to study.

“The UK and the US have always had a ‘special relationship’ and it is interesting to compare the next generation’s views on going green,” Jung said.

“The silver lining is that kids on both sides of the pond seem engaged and committed to helping the planet in the years to come.”

“And while it appears that the UK is moving forward in terms of green actions, we hope that in the near future, other countries will join in and work harder to protect our planet together.”
