GOOGLE is set to release a smart new Maps update that will solve a stressful parking problem for drivers – and it’s completely free.

The update can also help you avoid traffic and find your way around unfamiliar cities.

The changes all have to do with the introduction of the Destination Guidance system in the Maps service.

The new technology aims to revolutionize the function of the app, taking it beyond being used simply as a replacement for a satellite navigation system.

Previously, like virtually any navigation device, Maps provided turn-by-turn directions to a selected destination.

Both Google Maps and sister app Waze have started to introduce features including roadwork warnings, police incident notifications, and even alerts when there’s a speed camera nearby.

However, the new version of Maps will include a suite of extra Destination Guidance features designed to help drivers navigate areas they are unfamiliar with.

This will include a function to highlight multi-storey car parks and unrestricted parking spaces in the area.

Never again will you have to sail for half an hour past the only resident bays in search of a suitable stop.

Instead, all information will be sent directly to your phone to find the best parking options.

Vacant spaces will be marked on the map graphic with a large P icon.

Maps can guide you on your walk from your chosen location to your final destination, so you don’t find yourself wandering aimlessly trying to find the city center.

And if you can drive to the door, the app can also help you locate the entrance to buildings like hotels or housing estates, with a big green arrow appearing on the screen.

Elsewhere in the update, Google is making it easier for drivers to report things like traffic jams and road closures, helping you avoid long lines and crowded roads.

You can choose to recalculate your route to avoid delays and reach your destination on time.

Google has not yet confirmed the release date, but the software is expected to be released in the near future.

Similar changes will come to Waze, as well as a dedicated event reporting system, where drivers can flag delays related to occasions like football games or concerts.

It comes after a woman revealed how she received £11,000 in parking fines because of a “ridiculous” five-minute rule – even though she paid for the ticket.
