AN ENGINE to be launched by Volkswagen next year will be the last new petrol-powered car to be launched in the UK.

The best-selling German brand is preparing for a full switch to electric vehicles and is phasing out its gasoline, diesel and plug-in hybrid cars.

This means the next-generation T-Roc crossover will be the last all-new gasoline model.

According to AutoExpressoThe new T-Roc – due to be launched in 2025 – will borrow much of its engine and interior technology from the Tiguan.

Its spy photos suggest it will have a distinctive front end with rearward-sloping headlights, while further back it adopts a coupe-like appearance from the side.

They also suggest that the base version will feature a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with 114 or 148 hp.

Until now, the T-Roc was only available with a petrol or diesel engine – from the 1.0 liter to the 2.0 liter turbo in the top-of-the-line version.

Currently, the T-Roc sits between the larger Tiguan and T-Cross among VW’s engine range – and has been a popular model since its debut in 2017.

In fact, last year it was the best-selling engine in Europe and North America.

VW also makes a little-known Cabriolet version of the T-Roc, although earlier this year it was announced that the drop top edition would be discontinued when the updated version was launched in 2025.

The soft-top crossover – which was launched in 2020 – was the second best-selling convertible in Europe last year, and its loss will leave VW without a soft-top model across its entire lineup.

This comes as VW revealed in May that it will scrap its entire range of performance EVs – after just over two years.

However, that doesn’t mean the end of its sporty electric motors, with some of its most iconic models still defined for IV treatment.

And elsewhere, a spooky car graveyard filled with dozens of iconic 1960s Volkswagen Beetles has been discovered in an abandoned mine.
