Mexico has begun counting votes following an election Sunday that will almost certainly result in the country’s first female president.

The two leaders are Claudia Sheinbaum, from the ruling Morena party, supported by the government coalition Let’s Continue Making History (Sigamos Haciendo Historia), and Xochitl Galvez, supported by a coalition of opposition parties.

Jorge Alvarez Maynez, a third candidate, is running on behalf of the Citizen Movement.

As the first votes began to arrive, Sheinbaum took the lead, followed by Galvez, in line with opinion polls that placed candidate Morena as the firm favorite to win the presidency. Mexico has about 100 million registered voters and about 58 percent voted.

In addition to the presidency, voters also voted for around 20,000 positions in what is the country’s biggest election ever.

According to Mexico’s National Electoral Institute (INE), these positions include 128 Senate seats, 500 deputy seats, the government of Mexico City, and governments in eight states, including Chiapas, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Morelos, Puebla, Tabasco , Veracruz and Yucatán.

See how the three parties are performing in the presidential vote, according to the latest updates from INE:

When will we know the final results?

The results will probably only be finalized by June 8th.

However, on June 2, Mexicans will have access to the quick count, a statistical projection that estimates electoral trends from a random sample of 7,500 polling stations.

Between 22:00 and 23:00 (03:00 to 04:00 GMT) on June 2, INE will announce the results of the quick count of the presidential elections. This announcement will be delivered in a television message broadcast nationwide.

From 8pm (02h00 GMT) on Sunday, INE will also launch the Preliminary Electoral Results Program (PREP), a system that collects and publishes data recorded by poll workers. Al Jazeera will rely on this data for its vote count tracker, while also sharing the quick count when it is announced by election authorities.

When will the new president take command of Mexico?

Mexico’s newly elected president will take office on October 1, 2024, four months after election day.

This marks the first time the inauguration will take place on October 1 instead of December 1, following a change in electoral law in 2014.

Besides the presidency, what other races are you closely watched?

In addition to who will be the country’s next leader, the race for Congress continues to be fundamental.

The ruling party, Morena, aims to achieve a two-thirds majority in Congress, which is important to review the Constitution and eliminate what it considers to be cumbersome and expensive oversight agencies. The opposition, united in a loose coalition, claims that this action would pose a threat to Mexico’s democratic institutions.

This could also affect the weight and way investors react to elections.

“If [Morena] wins two-thirds of Congress, or comes frighteningly close, this becomes a more difficult decision for investors because it becomes a very different scenario, in which there are fewer restrictions on power”, Miguel Angel Toro Rios, dean of the Faculty of Social and Social Sciences Government at Tecnológico de Monterrey, he told Al Jazeera.

In Mexico City, competition is fierce, with Clara Brugada, from the ruling party, Santiago Taboada, from the largest opposition coalition, and Salomon Chertorivski, from the Citizens’ Movement, all in a close race.

Governors in large, populous states like Veracruz and Jalisco are also attracting interest.
