Although the woman was not identified, she was a member of the public and not an airport employee, according to a Department of Labor spokesperson.
Emergency crews were called to Terminal 5 around 7:45 a.m. Thursday following reports of a woman “trapped in machinery,” firefighters said.
When they arrived at the scene, they found the woman “entangled in the conveyor belt system used to transport the luggage,” authorities said.
Doctors pronounced the woman dead at the scene.
The area has been declared a crime scene and the Chicago Police Department is investigating.
