Matt Gaetz, who proposed bill to collect federal income tax in Bitcoin, now wants Blinken to downgrade US travel consultancy to El Salvador

O El Salvador Congressional Convention urged the Joe Biden administration to facilitate travel advisory from El Salvador to Level 1 from the current Level 3.

What happened: Led by deputy Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) and Rep. Vicente González (D-Texas), the bipartisan caucus sent a letter to the Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, asking the government to facilitate advice for the lowest Level 1, which corresponds to “Exercise Normal Precautions”.

The advisory is currently set to Level 3, or “Reconsider Travel.” the second highest rating.

The letter highlighted the remarkable improvement of law and order in El Salvador under President Nayib Bukele regime and called it the “safest” country in the Western Hemisphere.

“Since 2015, the homicide rate in El Salvador has steadily declined, from a high of 104 per 100,000 inhabitants to 2.4 in 2024. This homicide rate is lower than that of almost all major cities in the United States,” the statement said. Letter.

For those curious, Gaetz established the Congressional El Salvador Caucus in July, following a Congressional trip to El Salvador to attend President Bukele’s second inauguration.

Why this matters: El Salvador, led by Bukele, doubled down Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) since adopting the world’s largest digital currency as legal tender in 2021.

Just two weeks into his second term, President proposed the establishment of a Bitcoin bankto diversify financing options for borrowers.

Likewise, Gaetz, a Republican, is known for his support of the world’s largest cryptocurrency. In June, he proposed a bill that would allow federal individuals income tax payments to be made in Bitcoin.

A vocal critic of the Federal Reserve, Gaetz also co-sponsored a bill seeking to abolish the central bank.
