KYIV (Reuters) – Russia has launched an airstrike on Kiev, with air defense systems engaged on the outskirts of the city to repel the attacks, the Ukrainian capital’s mayor and military administration officials said on Sunday morning.

“Air defense units in operation, air raid warning continues,” Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on the Telegram messaging app.

Reuters witnesses said they heard at least two explosions in what appeared to be operating air defense units.

It was not immediately clear whether the attack caused any damage or injuries.

Serhiy Popko, head of Kiev’s military administration, said on Telegram that the capital remains under threat from Russia’s ballistic missiles.

Kiev, the surrounding region and all of eastern Ukraine were under air raid warnings, the Ukrainian Air Force said on Telegram.
