Olivia Munn is sharing the future of her and her family’s health after revealing another major surgery.
In an interview with Vogue published Sunday, Munn, 43, said that in addition to a double mastectomy for breast cancer, she opted for a hysterectomy as part of an overall “aggressive” approach to an aggressive cancer.
“It was a big decision to make, but it was the best decision for me because I needed to be there for my family,” Munn said.
Before the surgery, Munn was feeling “debilitating exhaustion” from a medication designed to suppress estrogen, the hormone that could cause cancer to recur.

“Some friends tried to cheer me up by saying, ‘Malcolm won’t remember this. Don’t worry.’ But I kept thinking to myself, ‘I’m going to remember this, that I lost all these things.’ It’s his childhood, but it’s my motherhood, and I don’t want to lose any of those parts if I don’t have to,” she said of the decision.
The surgery caused Munn to have “a real breakdown.”
“Because it’s so weird when you’ve had this body your whole life, you’ve had your period for so long, you feel when you’re ovulating and then suddenly it’s gone,” she explained.
Munn shares a son, Malcolm, with her comedian partner John Mulaney, and she told Vogue that she froze the eggs anticipation of your treatment.

“After my diagnosis, we decided to try another round of egg retrieval and we hope it was a good month. John and I have talked about this a lot and we don’t feel like we’re done growing our family, but [we] I didn’t know if I would have to do chemotherapy or radiation,” Munn said.
The “Newsroom” star also retrieved eggs a few years ago, at age 39, and before that, at 33.
“We just wanted a few more eggs,” she said. “At my age, one in 10 eggs is healthy and we hoped to produce an embryo from this retrieval.”
Munn was prepared to try a few times, but luckily after the first attempt at creating embryos, the couple had two healthy ones.

“John and I both started crying. It was so emotional because not only did we get this in one recovery, but it also meant I didn’t have to keep putting myself at risk. It was just incredible,” the “X-Men: Apocalypse” man said. star.
While she hasn’t shared specific plans for a second child with Mulaney, Munn said she’s ready to work with a surrogate.
“With surrogacy, you have to try to find a version of yourself somewhere in the world. Someone you trust as much as yourself to live the life of a pregnant woman the same way you would. It’s no longer a scary prospect for me because there’s nothing I can do,” she said. “I no longer have the capacity to carry a baby, so if we want to build our family, this is our option. This journey has made me realize how grateful I am to have options to not only fight cancer, but also to have more children if we want, because I know a lot of people don’t have those options.”
Munn announced your breast cancer diagnosis on March 13 in an Instagram post, explaining that she had an MRI after her doctor found her breast cancer risk assessment tool was 37%. The MRI found Luminal B cancer, “an aggressive and rapidly evolving cancer,” in both breasts.
She revealed that she had undergone genetic testing, saying: “I tested negative for everyone, including BRCA (the most well-known breast cancer gene). My sister, Sara, had also tested negative. We called each other and congratulated each other on phone. That same winter, I also had a regular mammogram.”
