A 37-year-old driver died Thursday afternoon in a car crash that ended with his car on its roof on a side street near Bayfront Parkway, just north of the intersection with East Sixth Street.
The crash was reported shortly after 2:20 p.m. at East Fifth and Wayne streets, just west of the road, Erie police and firefighters at the scene said. Wayne Street runs parallel to the road.
The car, a sedan, was heading east on East Fifth Street when it struck a curb as East Fifth Street turned into Wayne Street, Police Chief Dan Spizarny said.
Spizarny said the car went over the curb and rolled upside down near the railroad tracks between the road and Wayne Street.
Spizarny and Erie County Deputy Coroner John Maloney confirmed the driver died at the scene. Maloney said the driver was 37 years old. He said the Medical Examiner’s Office would release his name pending family notification.
The crash was reported at 2:22 p.m., Assistant Fire Chief Gregory Purchase said. He said firefighters arrived about three minutes later.
Police cordoned off the area as a crowd gathered. Several spectators cried when they learned that the driver had died.
Spizarny said the crash is under investigation. No other information was immediately available.
