Democratic Representative Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas announced Sunday that she has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and warned her constituents that she will likely be “occasionally absent” from Congress during her treatment.

“My doctors confirmed my diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. I am currently undergoing treatment to combat this disease that affects tens of thousands of Americans every year,” she said in a statement. “I am confident that my doctors have developed the best plan possible to treat my specific illness. The path ahead will not be easy, but I have faith that God will strengthen me.”

The 15-term congresswoman, who set up an unsuccessful offer for mayor of Houston last year, faced a primary challenge from a former congressional intern earlier this year for the deep blue 18th Congressional District. She prevailed with 60% of the votes.

Addressing his constituents, Jackson Lee wrote on Sunday: “As I continue my treatments, I will likely occasionally be absent from Congress, but rest assured that my office will continue to provide the vital services to constituents that you deserve and wait.”

The congresswoman noted that she is committed to working with congressional leadership and being “present at votes on legislation that is critical to the prosperity and security of the American people.”

“By the grace of God, I will be back with full strength soon,” she added.
