Iran, through its United Nations mission in New York, issued a statement that appeared to offer Israel a way to avoid further escalation if it considers the conflict “concluded.”
“Conducted on the basis of Article 51 of the UN Charter relating to legitimate defense, Iran’s military action was in response to aggression by the Zionist regime against our diplomatic facilities in Damascus,” said the mission statement, published on social media platform X.
“The matter can be considered concluded,” argued the mission. “However, if the Israeli regime makes another mistake, Iran’s response will be considerably more severe. It is a conflict between Iran and the rogue Israeli regime that the US MUST STAY AWAY from!”

Iran on Saturday night launched three waves of projectiles consisting of suicide drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles at Israel in response to an attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus. Many attribute the attack, which killed seven high-ranking members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), to Israel, but no Israeli official has taken credit for the attack.
Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations makes clear that “nothing in the present Charter shall prejudice the inherent right to individual or collective self-defence if an armed attack occurs against a member of the United Nations, until the Security Council has taken the necessary measures to maintain international peace and security.”
In the past, Iran has not adhered to diplomatic protection of embassies and consulates, particularly with regard to the US and Israel. Iran and its main strategic ally, the US-designated Hezbollah terrorist movement in Lebanon, have been accused of bombing the US Embassy in Beirut in 1983, in which 63 people, including 17 Americans, were murdered. And two suicide truck bombs blew up the barracks of American and French members of a multinational force in Lebanon in 1983, in which 220 US Marines, 18 US Navy sailors and three US Army soldiers lost their lives. Fifty-eight French soldiers were also murdered in the terrorist attack.

More recently, an Argentine court ruled that Iran, in collaboration with its proxy, Hezbollah, was responsible for the attacks on the Asociación Mutual Israelita Argentina (AMIA) and the Israeli embassy in 1994. The Associated Press reported.
Iranian student radicals in 1979 seized the U.S. embassy in Tehran and held about 52 Americans hostage in what became known as the Iran Hostage Crisis. The crisis “dominated the headlines and the news” and reportedly played a significant role in harming the image of President Jimmy Carter and in further eroding his popularity before the 1980 presidential election, which he lost in a landslide.
Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Last week he introduced a motion to condemn Israel for the attack on Damascus, but the United States, Britain and France opposed the declaration and prevented its adoption. They argued that many facts about the attack remained unclear and members were unable to reach a consensus.
Russia and Iran criticized Security Council members for not adopting the declaration, which Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called a “political assassination”, according to Middle East Monitor.
