The SouthCoast is expected to batten down the hatches this afternoon as the National Weather Service predicts a night of severe stormsthe area in severe thunderstorm watch.
According to a report released Sunday morning, much of Massachusetts is at moderate risk for severe weather, with “damaging wind being the primary threat, but large hail and an isolated tornado are also possible” across the state.
Locally, the NWS forecast calls for showers and thunderstorms from the afternoon into the evening. The time of greatest concern for thunderstorms is expected to be from 2pm to 10pm
“Some of the storms could be severe,” the NWS said.
The chance of precipitation is 80%. Rainfall can be heavy during stormy periods.
Wind speeds on the South Coast are not expected to be very high, around 7 to 16 mph, with slightly higher gusts.
What to do in a strong storm
If you are outdoors during a severe storm, seek safety inside a building quickly. Do not seek shelter under trees.
Stay away from windows. Avoid using running water or devices plugged into electrical outlets.
If you can’t get into a building, inside a parked car is the next best place to be outdoors during a lightning storm. Make sure it is parked in a location protected from falling power lines or trees.
If torrential rain occurs and you are caught driving through flash floods, do not drive through flooded areas. Turn around immediately and look for an alternative route.
