Walgreens is closing 91 stores this year – here’s the full list

Shoppers, maybe it’s time to find a new pharmacy. Walgreens is closing a quarter of its 8,600 U.S. stores.

CEO of Walgreens Tim Wentworth recently explained the O Wall Street Journal on June 27 that the closures would focus on locations that are unprofitable, too close to each other or in stores that face theft.

It also follows a decreasing trend of in-person prescription pickup, with many people opting to fill out your scripts online. “The current pharmaceutical model is not sustainable,” Wentworth told investors, according to a CNN report. Stores like CVS (which plans close pharmacies in selected destinations) and Rite Aid also experienced decreasing profits due to lower reimbursement rates for prescription drugs.

Price-conscious consumers have also been skipping the candy and card aisles — instead filling their digital carts at Walmart and Amazon. “Our customers are becoming increasingly selective and price sensitive in their purchases,” Wentworth told the Associated Press.

While the company did not announce a specific number of store closings, Walgreens representatives said they plan “significant” closures of underperforming stores across America. This number may also increase if performance does not improve.

According to CNN, 75% of the company’s stores in the US account for 100% of its operating revenue. The company will examine the remaining 25% of its 8,600 stores for closure. This is equivalent to around 2,150 stores closing stores across the country over the next three years.

While Wentworth confirmed the company will close some of its underperforming stores, he added that other locations could be transitioned into profitability. What’s more, employees working in the affected stores will be offered jobs elsewhere in the hopes that the move will not lead to “significant job losses.” according to the executive.
