2 arrested near security zone at Republican National Convention event

Police made two arrests near the Republican National Convention terrain and its events on Sunday.

Mayor of Milwaukee Knight Johnson said both incidents involved drunk people. One person was arrested near the Summerfest grounds, near where a convention welcome party was being held, and another was arrested after crashing into a security barrier near the convention.

“The events overnight were described to me as really uneventful,” Johnson said at a morning news conference. “There was a lot of preparation that went into planning this political convention and most of that planning was directly involved in and around the area of ​​public safety.”

Milwaukee police did not immediately respond to a Journal Sentinel request for more details about the arrest near Summerfest. A spokesperson for the mayor’s office said more details would come from police.

The car crash occurred at a westbound State Street barricade when a driver of a blue sedan crashed into it, losing nearby officers, a Journal Sentinel reporter noted Sunday.

Two police officers were also injured Sunday, Johnson said.

One of the injuries involved a person on the Summerfest grounds who was resisting arrest, while the other was unrelated to the crime and involved an out-of-state police officer who was experiencing heat-related health issues.

“Some of the things last night, where there were some arrests, some individuals had one or two too many drinks,” he said. “They were intoxicated and ended up having some interaction with the police, but I think this is routine and very calm.”
