A Memphis police officer and another individual died after an apparent crash near downtown Memphis on Friday morning, the Memphis Police Department said in a statement on social media.
According to MPD, police responded to a two-vehicle crash shortly after 3 a.m. at Mississippi and Danny Thomas avenues. When they arrived, three men were found injured. Two of those men were MPD officers.
All were taken to Regional One Health in critical condition, MPD said, where an officer and the driver of a gray Nissan were pronounced dead. The other officer remains in critical condition, MPD said.

“The preliminary investigation revealed that the driver of the gray Nissan also had a gunshot wound,” MPD said in the release. “The cause of the crash and the location of the initial shooting are still under investigation.”
The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the crash and MPD’s homicide bureau is investigating the shooting.
In an update posted to social media Friday morning, MPD said the initial shooting happened near South Parkway East and Mississippi Boulevard, about 2 miles from where the crash occurred.
“Preliminary information indicates that there was a disagreement between the deceased male victim and a male at the scene on S. Parkway E.”, MPD said. “No charges have been filed and the investigation is ongoing.”
