Mitch Landrieu, co-chair of Vice President Harris’ presidential campaign, criticized former President Trump’s decision to elevate Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) to his running mate, saying the senator is “not ready” for the job in an interview on Thursday.
“The fact is that Donald Trump’s character is exactly where he needs to be,” Landrieu said on the MSNBC show “Morning Joe.” “And people can never forget all the things that happened to him and whether or not he’s fit for office, he also has a candidate for vice president who’s not right, he’s not ready, and he’s, He’s not real.”
“So I’d put Tim Walz and Kamala Harris against those two guys any day of the week,” he added.
Landrieu also took aim at Trump’s campaign messaging since President Biden withdrew from the race and later endorsed Harris, suggesting that the former president is having trouble reaching out to Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) — who she chose as his pick for vice president earlier this week.
“He’s not ready for the presidency yet and he’s really grasping at straws right now and trying to find a way to make Kamala Harris and Tim Walz look bad, but they’re having a hard time doing it,” he said.
Harris’ campaign went on the offensive against Trump and his running mate, calling them “weirdos.” Vance has faced scrutiny in the weeks since joining the Republican ticket, especially since his past comments about “babyless babes” resurfaced.
Some Republicans have even questioned the former president’s decision to select Vance as his vice president, with Harris’ campaign suggesting Trump’s team has “buyer’s remorse” about the pick.
The Ohio senator defended herself amid criticism and has criticized Harris since she became the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, saying the vice president is “a million times worse” than Biden.
Vance chased Harris as he approached Air Force Two “to check out” the plane after he and the vice president landed at the same airport Wednesday in Wisconsin. Harris’ campaign responded by calling him “weird” and posting an edit from your own plane arriving on TikTok.
“I thought I’d come by and take a good look at the plane, because I hope it’s my plane in a few months,” Vance said in front of Air Force Two. “I also thought you might feel lonely because the vice president doesn’t answer reporters’ questions.”
