The Republican candidate and the Democratic nominee in the United States presidential race are tied within the margin of error in the country’s swing states, according to a new Ipsos survey released this Thursday (8).

The Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, has 42% of voting intentions and former President Donald Trump, 40%, according to the survey.

The seven states explored in the survey are regions that are not traditionally Democratic or Republican and will be decisive in deciding the election.

The survey was conducted from July 31 to August 7, 2024, among a representative probability sample of 2,045 adults ages 18 and older from Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

The survey did not reveal the results of the states individually.

The survey’s margin of error is 3.1 percentage points and has a 95% confidence level for results based on the entire sample of adults.

In the same poll conducted in June 2024 between Biden and Trump — before the Democrat dropped out of the race — the US president and the Republican candidate were also in a technical tie with a 37% to 35% advantage for Trump.

The survey also explores perceptions of candidates’ character traits. For Americans living in swing states, the words “Smart and Moral” are those most associated with Kamala Harris and “Patriot and Weird” with Donald Trump.

Kamala leads in national poll

In the national Ipsos survey, published this Thursday (8), the vice-president of the United States, Kamala Harris, has 42% of voting intentions, against 37% for Trump in the American presidential contest on November 5th.

The poll, conducted online, found that Kamala had widened her lead among the same group of Americans since a July 22-23 Reuters/Ipsos poll that put her 37% to 34% above Trump.
