Donald Trump, former president of the United States, is adopting a new campaign strategy for the presidential elections, according to International analyst at CNN Fernanda Magnotta. In recent statements, Trump classified Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as “left-wing radicals”.
According to Magnotta, this approach aims to replace the previous narrative that Joe Biden would not be fit for the presidency due to health and senility issues.
“Trump needs to regain control of the narrative as he had been doing and which gave him a lot of advantage, not only politically, but also in terms of communication, visibility”, explains the expert.
Campaign strategy and “attention economy”
The analyst highlights that Trump’s tactic is part of what some call the “attention economy”. By designating his opponents as extremist figures, the former president seeks to instill fear and concern, especially among those unfamiliar with the political profiles of Harris and Walz.
Magnotta emphasizes that this is not a new strategy for Trump: “He has done this in the past, including against Hillary Clinton, who was much less progressive than these two.” However, the expert states that neither Kamala Harris nor Tim Walz can be considered “left-wing radicals”.
“They, of course, are on a spectrum more to the left than today the Republican Party as a whole, which has transformed a lot and ended up leaning towards Trumpism, but throughout their public careers they have not defended many of the agendas that could be described as left-wing radicals”, explains Magnotta.
The analyst also makes an important addition about Kamala Harris’s political trajectory. During her campaign for the Democratic primaries, Harris adopted more left-wing positions to garner support from the party’s progressive wings.
However, Magnotta notes that this was a specific moment and that both before and after this period, Harris maintained more moderate positions.
With the electoral dispute intensifying, the verbal clash between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris is expected to intensify in the coming months, promising intense and detailed coverage of the American elections.
