Sarah Matthews, a former staffer for former President Trump, said Monday that she would not vote for Trump in November, signaling that she might vote for President Biden.

“When we have a candidate on the ballot who doesn’t defend the Constitution, then I feel like I have to leave politics aside,” Matthews said on MSNBC’s “Inside with Jen Psaki.” “And I want to support the person best suited to defeat Donald Trump.”

His comments contrast with other former Trump aides. Former Attorney General Bill Barr, who became a frequent critic of the former president after leaving office, said earlier this month that he would vote for the “Republican ticket” in November.

“I think it’s my duty to choose the person who I think would do the least harm to the country,” Barr said on Fox News’ “America’s Newsroom.” “And in my opinion, that is: I will vote the Republican ticket.”

Matthews said he has spoken to many Republicans, including senior elected officials, who privately “attack” Trump. But, she added, “many of them won’t even say that publicly.”

“And a lot of times, what they tend to say, is that they’re supporting him because of the policies, that they want the conservative agenda, and where I get really frustrated, is that they’re treating this like it’s a normal election. , a normal Republican candidate and a normal Democratic candidate,” Matthews continued. “Well, that couldn’t be further from the case.”

Following his decision to support the Republican ticket regardless of the candidate, Trump mocked Barr on social media.

“Wow! Former AG Bill Barr, who let down many important people by not investigating voter fraud in our country, just endorsed me for president despite me calling him ‘weak, slow, lethargic, cowardly and lazy ‘ (New York Post!),” Trump posted on Truth Social last week. “Based on the fact that I greatly appreciate your heartfelt endorsement, I am removing the word ‘lethargic’ from my statement.

Another Republican leader who clashed with the former president also supported Trump last month. Senate Minority Whip Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) endorsed Trump after his last remaining rival, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, suspended her campaign.

“It is abundantly clear that former President Trump has won the necessary support from Republican voters to be our candidate for President of the United States,” the senator said at the time. my support.”
