Former President of the United States, Donald Trump, who will run for the White House with Joe Biden in November, criticized Brazil’s trade protection in an interview with Time Magazine.
During the conversation, Trump spoke about his proposals if he is elected for a second term as head of the largest democracy in the world. Among the topics, the Republican spoke about immigration and how he intends to proceed with mass deportation. The former president also reinforced how a new administration under his command should intervene more directly in the Justice Department’s processes than its predecessors.
Trump also detailed his plans for other issues important to American voters: abortion, crime, the war in Ukraine and the conflict in the Gaza Strip. When talking about the economy, a determining factor in Biden’s drop in popularity despite all the positive indicators, the Republican spoke about trade in Brazil.
When asked about his strategies to increase the value of American products by increasing taxes on imports and a possible increase in inflation, Trump listed countries that he classifies as “difficult to deal with”, saying that China would be the leader in this aspect.
“India is very difficult to deal with. India — I get along very well with [Narendra] Modi, but they are very difficult to deal with in trade. France is frankly very difficult in trade”, said the former president. And he added: “Brazil is very difficult in trade. What they do is charge a lot to enter. They say, we don’t want you to send cars to Brazil or we want you to send cars to China or India. But if you want to build a factory within our country, that’s fine and employ our people.”
Trump also said that “Brazil is a country with very high tariffs.”
