Megyn Kelly said Wednesday that former President Trump should choose an “establishment” Republican like former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley or Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to be his running mate in the upcoming presidential election. 2024.

In an interview on NewsNation’s “Elizabeth Vargas Reports,” Kelly noted that Trump is “not that popular” among a significant portion of the Republican base, pointing to his recent poor performance in the GOP presidential primary in Indiana, where he polled 78 percent. of votes. vote, despite him being the only candidate left in the race. Haley ended her campaign two months ago but still polled 22%.

“Well, maybe you haven’t heard that Trump isn’t that popular among a core segment of the Republican Party,” Kelly said, responding to the Indiana primary results.

She acknowledged that Trump is unlikely to choose Haley or DeSantis — his main opponents in the 2024 primary race — but encouraged the former president to choose a vice presidential candidate with similar appeal.

“He should pick a running mate who represents that faction of the party, who is not core MAGA, who is a little more established,” Kelly said.

“That’s the truth about most Republicans right now,” she continued. “Although they still voted for Trump, the majority are not MAGA majors.”

Kelly said Trump “should pick a DeSantis-type candidate,” adding, “I know he probably won’t pick Haley, but he should pick someone like that for his vice presidential pick.”

The race to be Trump’s running mate has been heating up in recent weeks as Trump uses the audition process to unleash an army of surrogates who flood the airwaves to defend him and echo his talking points while remaining tied to a Manhattan court.

Trump, the Republican Party’s presumptive presidential nominee, has maintained a growing list of potential vice presidential candidates that includes Senators Tim Scott (SC), Marco Rubio (Florida), and JD Vance (Ohio); North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum and Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders; and Representatives Elise Stefanik (NY) and Byron Donalds (Florida).

Haley and DeSantis are missing from the list after a tough primary battle. Haley did not support Trump when he suspended his campaign for president, and DeSantis gave lukewarm support to the former president.

“It’s clear to me that the majority of Republican primary voters want to give Donald Trump another chance,” said the governor in the speech that ended his campaign. “Although I have had disagreements with Donald Trump, such as over the coronavirus pandemic and the elevation of Anthony Fauci, Trump is superior to current incumbent Joe Biden. That is clear.”
