Maryland State Senator Sarah Elfreth (D) has won the Democratic primary for Maryland’s 3rd Congressional District, according to a projection from Decision Desk HQ.

Elfreth, who was thenewestwoman already elected to the Maryland Senate when she won her seat in 2018, led Tuesday’s crowded primary race that alsoincluded former U.S. Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn, who was on duty during the Jan. 6 riots and attracted significant media attention before Tuesday.

Votingheld last month for Dunn’s team showed him leading within the margin of error, slightly above Elfreth. His campaign in the Chamber raised more thanUS$1.4 millionaccording to FEC filings, although that lags behind Dunn’sUS$4.5 million.

Elfreth is now expected to sail toward the general election in the district considered safe for Democrats this fall, although a handful of Republicans have thrown their name into the ring for the GOP primary.

Sarbanes, who has been in Congress since 2007, retires at the end of this term, opening a vacancy in the ChamberrepresentingHoward County and parts of Anne Arundel and Carroll counties, including Annapolis.
