Oregon state Rep. Maxine Dexter (D) is expected to defeat Rep. Pramila Jayapal’s (D-Wash.) sister in the Democratic primary for Oregon’s 3rd Congressional District, according to Decision Desk HQ (DDHQ).

Dexter, who is also a doctor, defeated Susheela Jayapal, the Washington Democrat’s sister and former Multnomah County commissioner, and six other Democrats for the outgoing seat of Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.). Blumenauer announced in October that he would not seek re-election to his Portland-area seat.

Dexter received support largely from Beaver State Democrats, including former governors. John Kitzhaber (D) and Ted Kulongoski (D), Oregon Senate President Rob Wagner (D), and Oregon House Speaker Julie Fahey (D), among others.

Meanwhile, Jayapal has received national endorsements from national progressives like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), his sister, and Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), among others.

Given the district’s strong Democratic leanings, Dexter is the heavy favorite to win in November.
