He supported him in 2020, but Charlamagne tha God is defending his decision not to publicly support President Biden ahead of this year’s election, saying “both candidates are trash.”
“I’m going to vote in November and I’m going to vote in my best interest,” the “Breakfast Club” radio host told his co-hostsin “The View”on Wednesday.
“The reality is I think both candidates are trash,” the TV personality, who was born Lenard McKelvey, said of Biden and former President Trump.
“I will vote for whoever I think can preserve democracy,” said Charlamagne tha God.
“If I think both candidates are garbage, and I have no desire to support one of them, would you rather I support an individual or endorse the fact that, hey, we need to go out there and protect democracy?” he asked.
“If I’m sitting here telling my listeners that there is someone out there who is a threat to democracy, there is someone out there who has said they want to suspend the Constitution to overturn the results of an election, have you seen this person try to lead an attempted coup in this country… There are only two candidates out there,” he said.
“So if I’m saying this about this individual: the choice is clear,” said Charlamagne tha God.
The threat to democracy, he later said, “is Donald Trump. If you want me to explain that.”
Despite indicating that he will vote for Biden without supporting him, the author of “Get Honest or Die Lying” criticized the 46th president. Last year, citing Biden’s low poll numbers, he called on him to drop out of the White House race.
Describing Republicans as “crooks” and Democrats as “cowards,” the 45-year-old radio host said both parties were in a race with apathetic voters.
“I feel like right now it looks like voter apathy might win,” he said. “But who is to blame? Is it our fault or the candidates’?”
Asked by co-host Sara Haines what Democrats could do to lose the “coward” label, Charlamagne praised Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas), who clashed last week with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R- Ga.) at a House Oversight Committee Hearing. Responding to an insult from Greene about her appearance, Crockett took a veiled jab at her Republican colleague, referring to her “poorly built, bleached-blonde body.”
“The former first lady once called a play and said, ‘When they go low, we go high,'” Charlamagne said, referring to the credo Michelle Obama made famous in her remarks at the Democratic National Convention 2016.
“I think you have to stop this move,” he said in his advice to Democrats. “When they get low, you have to take them to the ground.”
