Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) says he has a relationship with former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, who said this week that she will vote for former President Trump over President Biden in November.

“I understand this journey, I was in that position,” Cruz said during an appearance Wednesday night on CNN. “Now, she didn’t win any states, but she was the last person standing. I understand and she was in a very close primary, I was in that position.”

Haley, seen as one of Trump’s top contenders for the 2024 Republican nomination before suspending her campaign in early March, said during an event Wednesday at the Hudson Institute that she has decided to “put my priorities on a president who will have the back of our allies and hold our enemies accountable, who would protect the border, no more excuses.”

She added that Trump “wasn’t perfect” on several policies, but “Biden was a catastrophe.” Haley suggested her decision to support the former president this fall was largely based on that.

Cruz ran against Trump for the Republican nomination in 2016 with a number of other candidates and was the last to admit that the former president would win the nomination that year.

He said that when he decided to support Trump in 2016, it was based on the belief that he would go “with someone who says he will do good things and will do everything he can to help encourage him to do good things.”
