Former President Trump edged President Biden, his main general election rival, by 2 points in a new national poll released Friday.

Trump won 46 percent support from US voters at new Emerson College survey, surpassing Biden, who received 44 percent, a narrow lead within the margin of error. About 10 percent were undecided.

When these undecided voters were asked which candidate they preferred, there was an even split, with both candidates getting 50% of the vote.

Trump holds a double-digit lead over Biden among new voters, those who did not vote in 2020. The presumptive Republican nominee got 35 percent, while Biden got 24 percent. About 41 percent said they were undecided.

When third-party candidates are thrown into the mix, Trump’s support decreases by 2 points, but his lead over Biden increases.

The former president received 44 percent, a 5-point advantage over Biden’s 39 percent. Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. got 6 percent, while Cornel West and Green Party candidate Jill Stein each got 1 percent. Around 10% said they were undecided.

Biden’s approval rating was 37%, while 52% said they disapproved.

The economy was the most important issue for voters, at 38 percent. Immigration came in second, at 17 percent. Threats to democracy stood at 13 percent, according to the survey, while housing affordability, crime, access to abortion and healthcare represented 6 percent each.

The majority of voters, about 53 percent, said that even if Trump were convicted in his silent case in New York, where he faces 34 criminal charges, it would have no impact on their vote in November. A quarter of them, 25 percent, said the guilty verdict would make them less likely to support the presumptive Republican nominee, while nearly another quarter, 23 percent, would make them more likely.

The survey was conducted May 21-23 among 1,100 registered voters. The margin of error was 2.9 percentage points.
