Actor Robert De Niro called Donald Trump a “clown” who is bent on destroying American democracy this Tuesday (28). The artist made the statements outside the New York City courthouse, where the Republican’s bribery trial is being held.
De Niro, a longtime Democrat who recently narrated an ad for Joe Biden, attended a campaign event in support of the American president outside the Manhattan courthouse.
The event also featured two former police officers, Harry Dunn and Michael Fanone, who were at the US Capitol when it was attacked by Trump supporters on January 6, 2021.
The comments are part of the Biden campaign’s attempt to use wall-to-wall media coverage of Trump’s trial to promote its own message that the former president is a danger to democracy.
“We have forgotten the lessons of history that showed us other clowns who were not taken seriously until they became cruel dictators,” said the Oscar winner.
“With Trump, we have a second chance and no one is laughing now. This is the time to stop him by voting once and for all for him not to hold office,” he said.
If Trump returns to the White House, De Niro said, Americans could see the civil liberties they take for granted evaporate, as well as the end of elections.
“We New Yorkers used to tolerate him when he was just another real estate swindler masquerading as a big shot, a half-baked playboy who lied to the tabloids,” De Niro said. “A clown. Nobody took him seriously. Now they take it seriously.”
Trump spokesman Steven Cheung, who spoke after De Niro’s speech, said Biden’s team was in “full freak mode” over Trump’s resilience despite the multiple criminal cases against him.
