President Biden is ahead of former President Trump in New York — but only by single digits in the predominantly blue state, according to a poll released Thursday.

An Emerson College Polling/The Hill/PIX11 poll found Biden leading Trump 48% to 41%, with 12% undecided. When undecided voters are considered, the current president’s advantage increases to 10 points, 55% to 45%.

Biden also maintains a single-digit lead over Trump when independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and several other unlikely candidates – Jill Stein and Cornel West – are considered in the poll: Biden is at 44 percent, while Trump is at 38 Percent. .

These numbers are notable given New York’s predominantly blue status. The Empire State voted for Biden over Trump by a much larger margin, 61% to 38% in 2020.

But Republicans are enjoying some tailwinds. The poll found that just 39 percent of New Yorkers surveyed for the poll approved of Biden’s role as president, and Gov. Kathy Hochul’s (D) approval rating is even worse at 34 percent.

When respondents were asked what the most important issue facing New York is, the top issues New Yorkers named were also ones that Republicans leaned heavily on: 34 percent said the economy, 16 percent said immigration, and 13 percent said percent said the crime. Twelve percent said the housing was affordable.

“Independent voters in New York who traditionally voted Democratic, according to exit polls, have now shifted toward Trump by a ten-point margin, 43% to 33%,” said Spencer Kimball, executive director of the Emerson College Polling, in a press release.

The poll also found that the majority of New Yorkers believe Trump is guilty of some or all of the charges in his criminal trial, with 46% saying they thought he was guilty on all counts, 34% saying not guilty on all counts. accusations and 20% who believed he was only guilty of some.

Kimball noted, however, serious political ruptures in these numbers.

“71% of Democrats would find Trump guilty on all counts, while 71% of Republicans would find him innocent. Independents are divided: 37% say he is not guilty, 35% say he is guilty of all charges, and 29% think he is guilty of some but not all charges,” Kimball explained. “Overall, 84% of Democrats, 69% of independents and 46% of Republicans expect the jury to find him guilty of some or all of the charges.”

Biden is struggling with underwater approval ratings and polls that show him trailing in many key swing states. They also show closer-than-expected clashes in blue states like New York.

Although the election is more than five months away, polls offer warning signs for Biden and Democrats in what is expected to be another contentious election.

The Emerson College Polling/The Hill/PIX11 poll was conducted May 28-29 with 1,000 New York registered voters surveyed. The margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.
