Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Florida) has doubled down on the Republican National Committee’s (RNC) decision to host its national convention in Milwaukee, despite former President Trump’s recent comments about the city.
“In regards to Milwaukee, he was talking about allegations of voter fraud and also the crime rate, and I think it’s important for people to understand that their homicide rate may be low, but that doesn’t mean that violent crimes, etc. are going to be down. , they’re also lower,” Donalds said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday.
He also said the RNC and Trump are heading to Milwaukee because voters are “frustrated.”
“The reason the RNC and President Trump want to go to Milwaukee is because we know there are voters in the state of Wisconsin, like voters across America, who are frustrated with what has happened to our country under Joe Biden,” he said . .
“Immigration is skyrocketing and out of control. Job markets are okay, not great. Wages are falling when you adjust them for inflation. People are struggling to survive in Joe Biden’s America, so the president is taking his message everywhere.” he said.
The Trump campaign and its allies rushed to his defense after multiple reports emerged last week that Trump had called Milwaukee a “horrible” city. His campaign was quick to clarify the remarks, saying it was a “total lie” for him to call the city “horrible.”
“President Trump was explicitly referring to the problems in Milwaukee, specifically violent crime and voter fraud,” Trump campaign spokesman Dylan Johnson said in a statement last week.
Trump also denied comments about Milwaukee on Truth Social over the weekend, saying Democrats “are making up stories.”
The RNC is scheduled to host its national convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, next month, where it is expected to formally nominate Trump as its presidential nominee. The convention will begin just four days after Trump was convicted in his silence case.
